Happy Mental Awareness Month
Every Month should be Mental Awareness Month!
What is Mental Health and Wellbeing?
Mental health is essential to our overall wellbeing and as important as physical health. The month of October has been declared Mental Health Awareness Month to educate the public about mental health and reduce the stigma and discrimination that people with mental illness are often subjected to.
Mental health is vital to our functionality as human beings. It is important to invest, promote, protect and restore our mental health. When we feel mentally well, we can work productively, enjoy our free time, and contribute actively to our communities (WHO, 2020).
Every Month Should be Mental Health Awareness Month in South Africa
The psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has affected many people’s mental health globally, with apparent implications for employers worldwide, including South African businesses.
Don’t Neglect your Mental Well-Being
Research shows that mental health and nervous system disorders rank third highest after HIV and other infectious diseases in South Africa. However, the main difference is that mental disorders are far less likely to be treated than physical disorders since mental illnesses don’t always have obvious symptoms.
A Call to Action for Employers
Employers in South Africa have a fantastic opportunity to start breaking down the stigma attached to mental illness by being proactive and taking the conversation about mental illness into the workplace, using evidence-based Workplace Mental Health Programmes.
